Gumbootees, you’re in for a treat! Ever since Tara Kaye came back to Quadra, she’s been drawing and writing about her island experience, teasing out the character (and the characters) of her island home. The fruits of her creative endeavours appear right here in the gumboot by way of Meg’s Island, a cartoon strip inspired by… well… some of the colourful amongst us!

Tara first came to the island just over a decade ago, when she arrived (in self-proclaimed nouveau hippy chic) in a renovated schoolbus. She stayed for a few years and then went off to Delta where she honed her theatre skills with the Fleetwood Improv Group.

Now she’s back, bringing her many talents to share, and she’s keen to work and play. Tara describes Meg’s Island as a personal cartoon narrative that she sees evolving through time. Her characters will age in real time much as the folks do that inspire the storyline. In weeks to come, gumbootees will be introduced to the cast of Meg’s Island, and some of those characters may look a little familiar!

Tara wears several hats besides that of artist/cartoonist. She’ll be presenting Theatre Sports (improv) workshops for kids this summer at the Community Centre – check the gumboot and the summer rec brochure for details! And she also works at Running Bear Lodge under the shingle of business development consultant.

But for now, it’s time for Quadra to meet Meg. And let the games begin!

PS: Tara confided that she doesn’t actually own a pair of gumboots, so we’re putting out the call! She wears an 8.5, just so’s you know.
