There is an inspiring Textile Art Exhibit coming to Campbell River, so mark your calendar to see “Who Will Plant the Seeds of Hope?” showing at the Tidemark Gallery October 1 through 4 (noon to 5:00 pm.)

The show consists of 39 textile art pieces created by the North Island Quilters for Community Awareness. Each piece addresses a question about who will do the work that would normally be done by the people in Africa who are dying of AIDS. Themes include: "Who will plant the crops... Who will teach the children?... Who will carry the food to market?"

Viewers find this a moving and fascinating show, both for the subject matter reflecting daily acts of life in the context of the AIDS pandemic in Africa and the methods used in creating the pieces. Synthetic recycled fabrics were used and various techniques included: candle burning edges, appliqué, trapunto, distressing layers of fabrics, etc.

The collection received a tremendous response from the hundreds of people who attended the exhibit in Courtenay in June. When Stephen Lewis attended the show, he commented “This is the most thrilling and accomplished artistic undertaking in the history of the Foundation. Thank you."

There will also be a "Meet the Quilters" Reception Friday evening, October 3 from 7 to 9 pm. Each of the art pieces will be auctioned at a Gala dinner at the Westerly Hotel in Courtenay on October 18.
