Philip Stone
For Immediate Release
Green Party candidate Philip Stone today called for a regional strategy to address waste reduction and management in Vancouver Island North.

"One of the founding principles of the Green Party's economic plan is maximizing efficiency" Stone said "It has been calculated that we are currently utilizing our resources at less than a quarter of their real worth. This means we could be getting twice the value from our resources and be twice as prosperous. Before we embark on a bold new direction of sustainable green industry we need to address our waste." he added. "There is no point plowing investment into anything until we ensure that we will realize the maximum value from it. That starts with eliminating waste"

In two years landfill capacity in the Comox and Starthcona Regional Districts will be full and an alternative will need to be found. this is just one example but eliminating waste covers everything from forestry practices to consumer habits.

"I call upon the three regional districts, Comox, Strathcona and Mt Waddington, and the municipalities to work together and adopt a regional waste management strategy that aims toward zero waste" Stone said. "Chatting with respected Campbell River councillor Charlie Cornfield I am confident that there is an appetite for a zero waste initiative here. What better time to address this than when we have two years to put a plan together."

"The Federal government has a role to play here in providing funding for municipal and regional infrastructure. Investment in efficient waste reduction and management systems to the tune of $500 million a year is a key goal for the Green Party and this is an issue facing our region I intend to take to Ottawa and get results on" Stone concluded.
