KARDIA melds fable, fiction, science and metaphor to tell the story of Hope, a pathologist, who embarks on an unusual journey of reconciliation. The film weaves Hope's present day work with the bittersweet tale of her childhood.

As a young girl with a colourful imagination, Hope constructed an enchanting world for herself. She was found abandoned and raised by a veteran war pilot and a Scottish caregiver, Florrie. Her surrogate father, who teaches the girl the facts of life and science, is gradually going blind. When she undergoes heart surgery, he donates his blood for a transfusion for her. Through beautifully re-created scenes interspersed throughout the story, viewers gradually come to wonder if her blood donor was really as she remembers him, or Hope has fabricated an elaborate back story to give her life more richness.
Hope discovers that the experimental heart operation has mysteriously linked her life with another. To unlock the secret of her past, Hope revisits the curious tale of her childhood and explores the landscape of love, loss and the human heart. Her journey is an enigmatic one that is only fully understood in its final moments, when Hope reconciles what she believes with the truth she discovers. (Variety)
