Quadra leaps into action for a buck twenty-five!
General · 11th December 2008

It’s finally here – Quadra’s answer to reducing our island’s use of plastic disposable shopping bags! The Q Bag will be available, starting this week, for $1.25 at most Quadra stores. Over the next few months single use plastic shopping bags will be phased out. The goal? By February 1, 2009 no more disposable shopping bags will be handed out in island stores. Quadra may be the first Gulf Island to go plastic bag free.

Many people already have reusable shopping bags, but the trick seems to be to remember to take them shopping! To help jog our collective memory, stores will post decals with The Q Bag logo on their doors, a visual reminder to ‘Remember Your Bag!’ For the next few months, the stores will hand out small decals with the same message.

To kick off The Q Bag campaign, there will be draws for prizes every two weeks. Use your bag, and you’re eligible to pop your name into the ballet boxes located in participating stores.

As well as The Q Bag, a number of Quadra stores also sell baskets, cloth and silk bags, and patterns for making your own shopping totes. Check out Quadra Crafts, Heriot Bay Tru-Value Foods, Quadra Foods and Fun Knits.

Sierra Quadra and ICAN (Island Climate Action Network) would like to thank the following stores for their participation and support: Amped on Nutrition, Book Bonanza, Feed the Fire, Fermentations, Fun Knits Yarn Shop, Heriot Bay Inn, Heriot Bay Tru-Value Foods, Hummingbird Office & Art Supply, Island Cycle, The Landing Pub, Lovin’ Oven II, On Root Green House, Peoples Drug Mart, Quadra Foods, Quadra Crafts, Quadra Island Builders, Sidelines on the Boardwalk and Yellow Dog Trading Company. The Q Bag and decals are available at all of these stores.

Very attractive and useful Quadra bags. I have bought a few to take with me as Christmas gifts.
I am getting quite a collection of reusable bags. And this one ranks second in appearance only out-scored by the one that I made at the bag making event sponsored by the Sierra Club.

Wow interesting .. the plastic nazi's are out in full force in their suv's guzzling gas bringing the island into their idea of a cleaner environment, quietly forcing the public to go green or go elsewhere. Noble, idealistic, or plain silly... you decide, i already have.
In talking to some of the retailers they feel forced or shall we call it obligated, guilted into line by the plastic police to conform. It actually scares me that they can basically force the public to their way of seeing it, no mandate except what they themselves feel is right .
So now instead of my own form of recycling ie. using old shopping bags for garbage, or lunch bags , rain cover for books and clothes etc. as i go about my day, i now need to buy plastic bags to do the same as i did prior to the plastic nazi's save our island nonsense.
Now before you crank up your green powered hatred for me, think about it .. the retailers wont be giving bags away anymore, no ...instead they sell Chinese or some other 3rd world county made " Q bags" for more money than when we bought these same style of bags from retailers willingly, {yes i do use them}... hmm lets see.... last i looked 99 cents at some of the stores here on our "DICTATED" plastic free rock, or anywhere in campbell river.
Ok ok , so i don't agree with this dictated nonsense by the greenies in there suv's ..it still is my right to do so, at least until the green police make free opinion a form of air pollution. I am certain there are better ways to wave the green flag.
Oh look, is that a barge load of antibiotic laced fish farm food heading up the coast,to be used by WILD STOCK KILLING corporations for profit????.....But hey .... don't worry your pretty little green heads about that .. you have your new overpriced "
Q Bag" to carry your things home in.
