February is Black History Month in Canada, and what better way to celebrate than with the twenty-one voices of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Canada’s first professional choral group dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles. Founded and conducted by Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, and sponsored by the Quadra Cultural Committee, these fine young, Toronto-based singers will be on show twice at the Quadra Community Centre on Sunday, February 15. They will be working with Island Voices Chamber Choir in a master class from 1-3 PM, to which audience/observers are invited and they will be performing a full concert at 7 PM.
Since their inception in 1998, this internationally-renowned choral group has performed with famous artists like jazz pianist Joe Sealy and opera singer Kathleen Battle; and for such distinguished guests as Nelson Mandella, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Oscar Peterson. And this year, they have been invited to bring a musical tribute from Canada to Washington for the Inauguration of US President Barack Obama on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, performing at the Inauguration Day event of the Embassy of Canada in Washington, DC, and also at the "Out of Many" Festival of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) on Monday, January 19, 2009.
The Nathaniel Dett Chorale tours Western Canada in February, visiting Quadra Community Centre on Sunday, February 15. Tickets to listen to the Island Voices Chamber Choir Master Class with the Nathaniel Dett Chorale are $5, at the door. Tickets for the evening concert are $17 in advance at the Music Plant in Campbell River and at Hummingbird Art and Office Supply and Quadra Crafts on Quadra Island. Youth, 16 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Evening concert tickets will be available at the door for $20.
The vision of the Dett Chorale is to build bridges of understanding, appreciation and acceptance between communities of people through the medium of music. This vision, combined with dynamic musical talent and a program of classical, spiritual, jazz, folk, blues and popular music will empower every listener.
